QUANTUM® CELEBRATES TEN YEARS OF INNOVATION IN
EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY

As a “thank you” to instructors, parents and students, Quantum® is offering ten days of free access to the Quantum Tutors®, artificial intelligence tutoring software for Science and Mathematics.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — May 5, 2008, Quantum Simulations, Inc., a developer of artificial intelligence (AI) tutoring and assessment software, is proud to announce its 10th anniversary in business and technology innovation. To show its appreciation, Quantum® is offering ten days of FREE access to the Quantum Tutors® until June 30, 2008 to help students with final exams and to reinforce important science and mathematics concepts before their summer break. For access, please visit http://www.quantumtutors.com.

“From the beginning, we strived to create a learning environment that would inspire students to think independently about how to solve problems that went beyond rote and memorization,” stated Dr. Benny Johnson, president and CEO at Quantum®. “We wanted to improve self-efficacy by challenging students to solve problems on their own where they learn that it’s fine to experiment and even make mistakes along the way. This is a critical component to understanding a subject at a deeper conceptual level and why Quantum® has a direct and immediate impact on improving test scores today.”

Quantum’s company vision was first realized in 1998 when Dr. Johnson, a respected theoretical chemistry researcher with a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), became aware that U.S. students’ performance in science was severely declining. Reflecting on his own experience in education and passion for science and mathematics, Dr. Johnson wondered if it would be possible to create a software program that could be as inspiring and motivating as his mentor and high school teacher, Mr. Dale Holder, a recognized master teacher with 15 outstanding teacher awards. After extensive research and analysis with Mr. Holder, Dr. Johnson determined that proven teaching practices combined with artificial intelligence (AI) technology delivered to students over the Internet was the key to meeting this objective.

On the business side, Dr. Johnson partnered with technology start-up expert from CMU, Ms. Rebecca Renshaw, to launch the company. With Phase I funding from the U.S. Department of Education and the National Science Foundation and an award from the Pittsburgh Technology Council’s EnterPrize Business Plan Competition, Quantum® developed the first, and only, artificial intelligence tutors for science — the Quantum Tutors®. Ms. Renshaw further crystallized Dr. Johnson’s vision for the core technology by focusing on a business partnering model where Quantum’s AI engines could seamlessly integrate with textbook publishers’ homework products, educational software and learning management systems. By directly handling thousands of problems without the need for additional content development or manual programming, Quantum’s partners can leverage powerful AI technologies for the first time and provide a detailed level of tutoring, assessment and homework help not available with any other system on the market.

Today, with two patents, over $8.5 million in federal grant funding and several partners for distribution and collaboration, Quantum’s breakthrough software is having an impact in K-12 and higher education across the country. The company is now expanding its products to include business subjects such as accounting, developmental mathematics with a focus on college remediation and adult learning and the creation of exciting new applications for assessment and professional development.

“Quantum® has successfully taken academic theory and scientific research from the laboratory to the marketplace,” added Rebecca Renshaw, Quantum’s Executive Vice President. “We continue to be the ‘technology think tank’ in the industry and are grateful to the countless schools, collaborators, partners, federal agencies and outstanding employees that have helped Quantum® make a difference in education over the years.”
